The City of Toledo Department of Public Utilities is urging citizens to be aware of a new scam targeting customers of Toledo’s water and sewer service.
Customers have reported calls from individuals posing as representatives of “Winner’s International” and offering a reward of up to $750,000 for being a good paying utility customer. All you need to do to win is transfer $499.99 through Western Union.
Customers can protect themselves by keeping in mind the following:
- The Department of Public Utilities does not offer cash sweepstakes.
- City representatives will not contact customers for payment other than past due utility balances.
- The City of Toledo does not accept payment for utility services through Western Union.
- Customers should not send funds to representatives of the City of Toledo at any address other than that provided on city issued invoices or bills.
Citizens who believe they may have been a victim of this scam are encouraged to report the issue to the Toledo Police Department Investigative Service Division at 419-245-3142.
