ELECRICAL SERVICE RELEASE INSPECTION

Per City of Toledo Ordinance No. 44-95, Toledo Municipal Code Section 1301.13(c), and Division of Building Inspection’s Commissioner’s Ruling dated June 7, 1996, if electrical service has been terminated for more than one (1) year or the Division of Building Inspection is advised of the presence of hazards which necessitate re-inspection before energization, an Edison release will be required to energize services.

To activate existing electrical service, a service release electrical permit must be obtained from City of Toledo, Building Inspection Division located at #1 GovernmentCenter, Suite 1600.   The fee for this permit is $40.00 plus 1% if residential or 3% if commercial for the State Surcharge.  This fee is for one inspection only to determine if it is safe to turn on the electrical service.  Anyone may obtain the service release electrical permit for a residential or commercial building.  For mobile homes, only electrical contractors that are licensed and registered with the City of Toledo may purchase the Edison release.

YOU MUST BE AT THE ADDRESS ON THE DAY OF THE SCHEDULED INSPECTION TO LET THE INSPECTOR INTO THE BUILDING.

If the inspector approves the electrical service as safe to turn on, he/she will notify the Toledo Edison Company the next morning by fax.  The inspector does not certify or approve any other wiring at this time.  Questions regarding when your service will be turned on should be referred to Toledo Edison customer service at 1-800-447-3333.

If the inspector does not approve the electrical service as safe to turn on, he/she will leave a correction notice.  You will be required to obtain a new permit to do the corrections.

If you are the owner and occupant of a single family dwelling (not mobile homes), you are allowed to obtain a new permit if you are doing the work yourself.  If you do not understand or know how to do this work, you are required to hire a licensed electrical contractor to make the repairs and bring the building up to the standards of the National Electrical Code.  The fee for this permit is based on the size of the service installed.  All other buildings (commercial, apartments, mobile homes, and multi-family units) will require a new permit by a licensed electrical contractor.
